Jillian Moore

Colorful, bright, garish, flashy and shiny….. is the best way to describe Jillian Moore’s wearable, organically shaped sculptures. They seem to be alive; sprung from some strange space or underwater world or neither. Jillian is a master of pareidolia; looking at her objects one is immediately inclined to recognize alien, living beings. The shiny, glass-like surface gives her artworks a fragile appearance and the Iowa-based artist answers the question of whether they are made of glass with a smile.

She forms the basic structure of her objects from copper, basal wood, carved foam, fiberglass or resin composite and wax.

She then layers synthetic resin, paints, pigments, pearls, glitter, microbeads or polystyrene balls to form the actual object. She builds small sculptures from the individual parts and then joins them together. In this way, for example, one part simply grows out of another and creates a certain “space character”. The clear epoxy resin, which is then coated with paint, achieves a surface depth that one would only expect from glass works.

Jillian Moore lives and works in Iowa, USA and graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in the metalsmithing and jewelry program at the College of Fine Art and Communications, Western Illinois University, Macomb, IL. She received her Master’s degree in 2008 from the Jewelry and Metal Arts program, School of Art and Art History, University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA.
